Build Your Email Mailing Lists

by jack on October 30, 2009

Got a great question here: “how do you build email mailing lists?”

It’s great because this is questions and answers related, and I’m sure everyone on the list will agree, it’s the most important thing to know when growing an online income.

First off, you might be thinking that you can get a gmail account, and start building some email group there, and just email that group whenever you want.  This does work for your friends, but as soon as you try to pitch an offer, people will complain, and your account will be closed.

So, don’t do it that way.  Start off the right way, with the tools or service that is designed for sending commercial email.  By this, I don’t mean get a web server and install mailing software, because this is a very dangerous route to take.  You can get your hosting account suspended in mere minutes if you don’t know what you are doing.

The best way to run opt-in email marketing campaigns is to use a low cost high quality professional service that is designed for small or large lists, that lets you start building your opt in list right away.

The four top email mailing providers for anyone starting out are the well known names that you probably have heard of.

Here’s the list of the top 4 email list hosting services :  Aweber, the award winning opt-in email service online, and Get Response, in the #2 position.  Both are excellent, and you will be very happy with either of them.  Both offer $1 or free trials, so you can try them out and see for yourself if you like their service.

Personally, I like Aweber, because the built-in “do this, click here” guide they have is simply the best for knowing how to set things up.

There are two other companies to mention, namely Constant Contact, and Infusionsoft.  Infusionsoft, for one, is like an 800-pound gorilla that can take a long time to master, so I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone that is starting out.

Aweber, for one thing, can even mix and match features, letting you choose single opt-in (one click to get on your list), or dual opt-in (click with email confirmation), and advanced features like telling you who clicked on a link you sent (very useful when sending out promotions using 2 or more emails).
Once you have chosen an email service, the next thing is to set up a newsletter (also known as an email mailing list).  A newsletter has a name, an optional welcome message, as well as confirmation messages that get sent to new subscribers.

You can always set up more newsletters (most sites let you have as many as you want), and once you have a newsletter setup, and subscribers joining, then whenever you send an email to that newsletter, everyone on the list will get the mail.

It’s a magical thing when you can write a message, hit the “send” button, and see money within minutes.  That is the power of building opt in email lists.

You can also combine your mailing lists, and send a single message to any or all of your newsletters with one click.  You can group your newsletters by category, then choose any category you want, and easily send an email to that group.

As a final note, you might hear the term autoresponder, which is just simply another name for all the stuff we just talked about.  The fact that these email services let you set up a a series of automatic emails to be sent to every subscriber that joins your list, without you being aware of it, gives you an idea of the power you can get when you hook up with the right email service.

Don’t be like me, and waste time thinking you can do what AWeber and Get Response do…fact is, the successful marketers use these guys because they are essential to any online marketing campaign.

Jack,

I wanted to thank you for sharing your thoughtful advice in this post. Through the process of using commercial email service, marketers build trust with their contacts and it empowers marketers to lean on the expertise found within that email provider for architecture, speed/performance and integration capabilities.

I just wanted to let you know that our software is admittedly complex right now. We’re continually working to simplify it while adding new features on a regular basis. Your feedback is valuable to help us understand what makes it complex so we can address it in future versions of the software.

That said, your feedback here is useful so we can make our software intuitive, attractive and powerful for entrepreneurs and marketers so they can grow their business without headaches.

If you want to let me know more details, my email address is provided with the comment. User feedback is important and necessary in order for us to grow.

Thanks,
Joseph Manna, Infusionsoft
